White Mountains Almanac

Mount Washington Observatory

2025

I partnered with the Mount Washington Observatory to produce a series of illustrations for their inaugural publication, “The White Mountains Almanac,” released in 2025 in partnership with the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation and the Appalachian Mountain Club. This deeply researched publication offers insights on shifting weather patterns with a month-by-month portrait of climate and biology studied from a diverse range of elevations in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, including the temperate foothills and sub-arctic mountaintops.

This project has been made possible with support from the Cabot Family Charitable Trust, The Nature Conservancy of NH, Stephen Walker and Diane DeLuca, and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

Mount Washington Observatory (MWOBS) works to advance understanding of the natural systems that create Earth’s weather and climate through its around the clock weather operations and by developing and offering innovative educational programs.

The Hays chart is a graph of the wind speed for a 24-hour period. The chart rotates on a device while a needle automatically records the wind speed on the chart. It is kind of like a seismograph, but for wind instead of earthquakes. Mount Washington Observatory conducts research to understand extreme weather and climate shifts by recording exact temperature, wind speed, humidity, and other data at the summit every hour of every day for nearly a century.
