WHARTON ESHERICK MUSEUM Art Direction: Brand Identity & Website | 2018
Serving as Art Director, I led a small team to create a new visual identity and website for the home and studio museum of famed American craftsman, Wharton Esherick (1887 — 1970). Located atop Valley Forge Mountain in Chester County, Pennsylvania on 12 wooded acres, the Wharton Esherick Museum campus is comprised of multiple buildings including Wharton Esherick’s studio, which is now the centerpiece of the museum. Esherick’s highly individual, hand-built studio was constructed over a 40-year period beginning in 1926, incorporating Arts and Crafts, Expressionist, and organic designs. Two years later Esherick began his 1928 Expressionist garage, now the museum Visitor Center. In 1973, just one year after its official opening as a museum, the studio was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1993, the Wharton Esherick Museum was designated a National Historic Landmark for Architecture.

This brand and content refresh presents the Wharton Esherick Museum in a professional, contemporary format to ensure its position as a current, relevant marker in the landscape of home studio museums. Deliverables included new logo and branding style guide, branded print and electronic newsletter templates, new seasonal site photography, and a new website and online store.

Wharton Esherick Museum’s logo is an abstraction of the artist’s original hand-carved signature. It represents the full scope of his work, invoking the many disciplines he had embraced over the course of his career. The icon and type treatment tap into the unique, warm, playful nature that is characteristic of Wharton’s aesthetic and of Wharton himself.
